To You

in a room full of strangers came the question
so pedestrian, yet an ice breaker just the same

would you, could you, if given the chance
would you do it all again?  would you do it over?

a younger me would say yes, being too close
to understand that distance dulls the memories

in some cases, erasing them completely
unless fished for, like boots on a lake’s bottom

yet, every step along the path created who i am
the good, the bad, the unsavory, the silly

i am the product of everything and everyone
what i took molded who i would become

if i erased anyone of those things, or people
would i then erase you

with a stop, a start, tears and sorrow
i knew i could never give up anything

that led me to you
