the quiet stillness
that was completely welcome to him
stirred restlessness in her
an illness she couldn’t shake

after so many years of noise
silence was something to fear
maybe not the enemy,
but not a friend

the dance of the sounds
they knew by heart
knew when to come together
and when to move apart

yet, always together in intent

now, though, their embraces
once tight and supportive
were both awkward and clumsy
strangers in a strange land

not together, not apart
as life ripped at her heart
each time a child flew  the nest

his own life to start
