Raw Pain

People thought they were intensely blue
as a matter of birth

That the husky voice, whiskey in nature
was a gift from God

The thin frame, small appetite
exhibitions of restraint and moderation

The light touch, a gimmick to make
one lean in for another

No one imagined these were the manifestations
of raw pain, so searing it hurt
just to breathe, let alone
live
