Sorrow Knocks

Warm summer evening
full moon
dreams of expectation of
being reunited

Exploded into
searing sadness
at the knock of the door

Police officer, uncomfortable
hat in hand, asking
were you, do you, is he
while confusion
shatters the dream

First sorrow knocked
in the form of the officer
followed by relatives, each
enveloped in their own sadness and
melancholy

Sadness knocked
and delivered food
coffee
fresh mourners
and people attempting
to comfort
the shattered dream

When sorrow stopped
knocking
it started calling
inquiring, questioning
intoning, needing
requesting

Sorrow found its
way into food,
work, sleep, mail,
daily ebbs and flows

Until sorrow was all
that was left

An unwelcome houseguest
to replace lost love
