Left Behind

I’ve left many behind
gone, not forgotten
sometimes not forgiven
cast aside in anger,
fear, quickness, or regret

But years are not linear
the past circles back onto
the present
in ways you don’t imagine
when you’re young
and dramatic

Time steals memories,
beauty, righteous indignation
leaving behind the realization
that love stretches
and more persistently
than you can imagine
in youthful folly

Until one day
at your doorstep
stands your past love
whether it be
a friend
a lover
an acquaintance
family member or
soul mate

To be reunited once again
to the one love
that is in all of us

Where no one gets
left behind

or forgotten
