In Sideways Stories from Wayside School, I found one of the greatest inspirations regarding attitude. In the chapter for DJ, he is questioned as to his unusual happiness. Everyone wants to know WHY is he so happy. To which he responds quite sagely, “You need a reason to be sad, but you don’t need a reason to be happy.” Word!
As such I’ve lowered my expectations for what it is to be happy. Every day that I wake up, I can be happy. After all, what’s better than being alive? Then, as I see it, if I’m able to walk around, that’s whipped cream on top of the sundae of life. Finally, if I have my mental faculties about me (yes, I rock my own brand of crazy, but it’s MY crazy), that’s the cherry on top.
As I’ve grown older, I’ve found that life is so much easier. Part of that is realizing that just being here is good enough, whether you have all the toys or not, and that people, not possessions, are what’s important.
